Stephen West, born and raised in Tulsa, is currently based in Amsterdam where he studies dance and designs beautiful and popular knitwear. His shawl designs and innovative colorwork have helped him become a widely recognized and respected designer around the world. Stephen’s designs have been published in, Malabrigo Book 3 and recently in Jared Flood’s Wool People. He also self-publishes his own series of knitting books.

Top Down Shawl Workshop
In this workshop Stephen West uses his popular shawl designs to talk about shape, construction, and drape. Students will knit a small triangular swatch while topics such as cast-ons, increases, bind-offs, and blocking are discussed. Special emphasis will be focused on different shaping techniques. You will also learn some of Stephen’s favorite tips and tricks!

Materials: scrap yarn and needles of choice for a swatch

Color Play, the Westknits Way!
This class is all about showing off beautiful yarns with simple techniques combined in clever ways. Techniques like stripes, slipped stitches, cabling, and intarsia will be explored and combined to create bold architectural fabrics. We will thoroughly discuss how drastically different fabric characteristics are achieved with fiber content and color choice.

Materials: An array of colorful scrap yarn for swatching (fingering or worsted weight recommended) and needle size of choice, cable needle (optional)

Tips & Tricks with Stephen and Malia
Stephen and his knitting partner/fellow designer Malia Mather will share their favorite techniques and short cuts. Topics such as cast-ons, bind-offs, shaping, fixing mistakes, and design will be discussed. It will be a sampler platter of information sharing with special emphasis on efficiency.
